MSA System

Mineral Saccharide Aging — a new aseptic aging process that reinterprets traditional Korean herbal processing methods (Poje, 炮製) through modern science.

Why Crealand Developed MSA

Where MSA Comes From

In traditional Korean medicine, the same herb is processed differently depending on the patient's constitution (Suchi and Poje methods), lowering toxicity while raising efficacy. Folk tradition likewise used salt and honey curing to draw juice safely out of natural materials through osmotic pressure. MSA System reinterprets both of these traditions through modern biochemistry.

How MSA Works

Biological Conversion (Bio-conversion)

Mineral saccharides activate each plant's own enzymes, inducing natural bio-conversion without external fermentation microbes.

Catalytic Action (Catalysis)

Minerals catalyze the activation of valuable phytochemicals within living plant tissue.

Osmotic Pressure Extraction (Osmotic Extraction)

Osmotic pressure gently extracts active compounds, balancing quality, quantity, and safety in a single process.

The Science Behind It

Living plant cells contain a wide range of enzymes, but many of them function fully only when a cofactor is present, forming a complete holoenzyme. Without that cofactor they remain inactive proteins, or apoenzymes. MSA System supplies the required cofactors and prosthetic groups through minerals and saccharides, converting inactive apoenzymes into active holoenzymes. This shifts the plant's biological function and generates new active compounds that conventional extracts do not contain.

Process Duration

The first aging stage, combining biological material with mineral saccharides, usually takes one to two months or longer depending on the material; Bio-Liqu™, for example, is aged for more than three months. A second extraction with water or polyol follows, then filtration and filling. A third stage is added only when needed. Artificial processing such as heating or pressurization is excluded throughout the entire process.

Scale of Application

More than 80 MSA-applied ingredients have been developed and commercialized to date. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, including fruits and vegetables, herbal medicines and folk-remedy botanicals, flowers and fruits, grains, and fresh leaf teas.
